Fountain of gardens

Summary

A name meaning 'fountain of gardens' applied to two towns: one in the lowland of Judah, and another on the border of Issachar assigned to the Levites.

Town in Judah

One En-gannim was located in the lowland (Shephelah) of Judah, mentioned between Zanoah and Tappuah. It has been identified with Umm Jina.

Town in Issachar

Another En-gannim was on the border of Issachar and was allotted with its suburbs to the Gershonite Levites. It is probably the modern Jenin, the first village encountered when ascending from the great plain of Esdraelon into the central hill country. The 'gardens' and 'spring' that gave it its name still characterize the place. It may be the same as Anem mentioned in Chronicles. Near here was Beth-haggan ('the garden house'), by way of which King Ahaziah fled from Jehu.
