Suburbs
/SUB-urbz/
Summary
Open land around Levitical cities used for pasturing livestock, extending 1,000 cubits from the city wall.
☩Definition
The Hebrew 'migrash' (from 'garash,' to drive out cattle) designates the open country around a city used for grazing. When the Levites received their forty-eight cities, each included 'suburbs' extending 1,000 cubits from the wall for pastureland. This land could not be sold permanently but remained attached to the city.
