עַשְׁתָּרוֹת/ASH-ta-roth/

Plural of Ashtoreth, the goddess

Summary

A city in Bashan, east of the Jordan, that served as the capital of King Og and was later assigned to the Levites.

City of Og

Ashtaroth was the royal city of Og, king of Bashan, one of the giant kings whom Israel defeated before crossing the Jordan. The city was named for the goddess Ashtoreth. After the conquest, it was assigned to the half-tribe of Manasseh and later designated as a Levitical city for the Gershonites, where it appears under the alternate name Beeshterah, a contraction of Beth-Ashtaroth.
