Timon

Τίμων/TY-mon/

A common Greek name meaning 'honorable'

Summary

Timon was one of the seven men chosen by the Jerusalem church to oversee the distribution of food to widows, freeing the apostles for prayer and the ministry of the word.

Selection as One of the Seven

When complaints arose from the Hellenistic Jews that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food, the apostles proposed that seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, be appointed to oversee this ministry. Timon was the fifth named among these seven chosen by the congregation and appointed by the apostles through prayer and the laying on of hands. His Greek name, like those of his colleagues, suggests he may have been a Hellenistic Jew, particularly suited to address the concerns of the Greek-speaking community.
