Sharai

שָׁרַי/SHAH-rye/

Releaser

Summary

A descendant of Bani who was required to divorce his foreign wife during Ezra's reforms.

Identity

Sharai was one of the 'sons' (descendants) of Bani who had married foreign women after the return from Babylonian captivity. When Ezra led the reformation requiring separation from pagan wives to preserve Israel's religious purity, Sharai was among those who complied with the decree around 457 BC. His name means 'releaser,' though it appears with various spellings in different manuscripts.
