Pharez(perez, phares)

פֶּרֶץ/FAY-rez/

Breach or breaking forth

Summary

Pharez (or Perez) was the son of Judah by Tamar and an ancestor of David and Jesus Christ.

Birth Narrative

Pharez was one of twin sons born to Judah through his daughter-in-law Tamar. During the birth, Zerah's hand appeared first and was marked with a scarlet thread, but Pharez 'broke out' first, hence his name meaning 'breach' or 'breaking forth.' This unexpected birth order established Pharez as the firstborn.
