Omar

אוֹמָר/OH-mar/

Possibly 'eloquent' or 'talkative'

Summary

Omar was a grandson of Esau through Eliphaz, and a chief among the Edomites.

Identity

Omar was the second son of Eliphaz, who was the firstborn of Esau by his wife Adah. This made Omar a grandson of Esau (Edom) and a great-grandson of Isaac. Omar became one of the chiefs (dukes) of Edom, leading one of the clans that made up the Edomite nation. The Edomites occupied the mountainous region of Seir, south of the Dead Sea, and were persistent adversaries of Israel throughout biblical history.
