Nemuel

נְמוּאֵל/NEM-yoo-el/

Day of God, or spread of God

Summary

Nemuel was the name of two men in Israel: a son of Simeon and progenitor of a clan, and a Reubenite who was a brother of Dathan and Abiram.

The Simeonite

The first Nemuel was the firstborn son of Simeon and progenitor of the Nemuelite clan. He is elsewhere called Jemuel in the earlier genealogies. The variation in the name is likely due to textual transmission.

The Reubenite

The second Nemuel was a son of Eliab of the tribe of Reuben, and was a brother of the notorious Dathan and Abiram who rebelled against Moses. Unlike his brothers, Nemuel is not recorded as participating in their rebellion.
