Memucan
Summary
One of the seven princes of Persia who advised King Ahasuerus, proposing the deposition of Queen Vashti.
☩Persian Prince
Memucan was among the 'seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom' (Esther 1:14). These were the highest officials with direct access to the king. They were consulted when Queen Vashti refused the king's command to appear at his banquet.
☩Advice Against Vashti
Memucan answered that Vashti had wronged not only the king but 'all the princes, and to all the people' throughout the empire (Esther 1:16). He warned that her example would encourage other wives to despise their husbands. He proposed her permanent removal: 'Let there go a royal commandment... that Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus' (Esther 1:19).
☩Divine Providence
Memucan's counsel, though motivated by concern for male authority, unwittingly served God's purposes. Vashti's removal created the vacancy that would be filled by Esther, positioning her to save her people when Haman plotted their destruction. Human decisions, even those mixed with pride and prejudice, cannot thwart divine plans.
