Maharai was a native of Netophah, a town near Bethlehem in Judah. He was numbered among David's 'mighty men'—the elite warriors who formed the king's personal guard and commanded his armies. As a descendant of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, he was appointed the tenth of the twelve monthly captains, each commanding a contingent of 24,000 men for David's military administration.
