Mahalaleel
“Praise of God”
Summary
Mahalaleel, meaning 'praise of God,' was the name of two men: an antediluvian patriarch in the line of Seth who lived 895 years, and a descendant of Judah whose family returned from the Babylonian exile.
☩The Antediluvian Patriarch
Mahalaleel was the fourth in descent from Adam through the line of Seth, being the son of Cainan. Born when his father was seventy years old, Mahalaleel became the father of Jared at sixty-five and lived to the age of eight hundred and ninety-five years. He appears in Luke's genealogy of Jesus under the Anglicized form 'Maleleel.' Some scholars have fancifully identified him with mythological figures, but such connections are without foundation.
☩Descendant of Judah
A later Mahalaleel was a member of the tribe of Judah from the family of Perez. He was the father of Shephatiah and an ancestor of Athaiah, one of those who resided in Jerusalem after the return from the Babylonian exile.
