Machi
מָכִי/MAY-ky/
“Smiting or decrease”
Summary
Machi was a Gadite whose son Geuel was chosen to represent the tribe of Gad among the twelve spies sent to explore the land of Canaan.
☩Identity
Machi is mentioned only as the father of Geuel, who served as the commissioner on behalf of the tribe of Gad when Moses sent twelve men to spy out the land of Canaan. The expedition took place before 1657 BC as Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land. Some manuscripts of the Septuagint and Peshitta read his name as 'Machir,' suggesting possible textual confusion with the more famous Machir of Manasseh.
