Ithiel

אִיתִיאֵל/ITH-ee-el/

God is with me

Summary

A name appearing in Proverbs and Nehemiah, with the Proverbs usage presenting interpretive difficulties.

In Proverbs

The words of Agur are addressed 'unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal.' Some interpreters take these as proper names of Agur's students or correspondents. Others read the Hebrew as a declaration: 'I have wearied myself, O God, I have wearied myself, O God, and am consumed.' The passage remains obscure.

Key verses:Proverbs 30:1

Benjamite in Nehemiah

A Benjamite named Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah, was an ancestor of Sallu, who settled in Jerusalem after the exile. This provides a clearer personal reference to someone by this name.
