Summary

A captain who arrested Jeremiah on false charges of deserting to the Babylonians.

The Incident

Irijah son of Shelemiah was captain of the guard at the Benjamin Gate when Jeremiah attempted to leave Jerusalem during the siege. He arrested the prophet, accusing him of deserting to the Chaldeans. Despite Jeremiah's protests of innocence, Irijah brought him to the princes who had him beaten and imprisoned.
