Summary

The people of Babylonia who established a powerful empire, and also a class of learned astrologers, magicians, and wise men famous throughout the ancient world.

As a People

The Chaldeans were originally a warlike people inhabiting the mountains north of Assyria. They later became the ruling class of the Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar. The prophet Habakkuk describes them as a bitter and swift nation raised up by God to execute judgment on Judah.

As Wise Men

The term 'Chaldeans' also designated a priestly class devoted to the study of astronomy, astrology, and divination. They were consulted by Babylonian kings for interpreting dreams and signs. Daniel and his companions were educated in their learning but relied on God rather than their methods for true wisdom.
