Elipheleh

אֱלִיפְלֵהוּ/ee-LIF-eh-leh/

May God distinguish him

Summary

A Levite gatekeeper and musician appointed by David to play the harp when the ark was brought to Jerusalem.

Levite Musician

Elipheleh was a Merarite Levite appointed by David to serve as both a gatekeeper and musician when the ark was brought from Obed-edom's house to Jerusalem. He was among the 'brethren of the second degree' who played on harps 'on the Sheminith' (a musical term, possibly indicating a lower octave or an eight-stringed instrument). The name means 'may God distinguish him' or 'God of his distinction,' perhaps expressing parental hope that God would set their son apart for special service.
