Established by Jehovah

Summary

A Levite of the family of Izharites who served as chief of the singers and led the musical services when the ark was brought to Jerusalem.

Role in Worship

Chenaniah was a Levite of the family of Izharites who served as chief of the temple singers. He conducted the grand musical services when the ark was removed from the house of Obed-edom to Jerusalem. The Hebrew text describes him as 'chief of the Levites' over 'the songs' or possibly 'the carrying' of the ark. He also served as an officer of David, with his sons assigned to external duties as officers and judges over Israel.
