Abiel

אֲבִיאֵל/AY-bee-el/

Father of strength or God is my father

Summary

The name of King Saul's grandfather and one of David's mighty warriors.

Saul's Grandfather

Abiel was a Benjamite, the son of Zeror, and the father of Ner and Kish. Through Kish, he was the grandfather of King Saul, and through Ner, he was the grandfather of Abner, Saul's commander-in-chief. The genealogies in Chronicles appear to give additional detail, sometimes naming him as Jehiel as well, and the exact relationships have occasioned some scholarly discussion about whether generations were omitted in certain lists.

David's Warrior

A different Abiel was an Arbathite, one of David's distinguished warriors listed among his mighty men. In the parallel passage in 2 Samuel, he is called Abi-albon, which appears to be a textual variant of the same name.
