Ner

נֵר/NER/

Lamp or light

Summary

Ner was a Benjamite, the father of Abner (the commander of Saul's army), and an ancestor in the genealogy of King Saul.

Family Relationships

According to the genealogical records, Ner was the father of both Kish and Abner, making him the grandfather of King Saul. Abner was therefore uncle to Saul, as is expressly stated in 1 Samuel 14:50. Some confusion has arisen from the statement in 1 Chronicles 9:36 that both Kish and Ner were sons of Jehiel, which has led some to conclude they were brothers. The explanation may be that there was an elder Kish, uncle of Saul's father, or that Kish is enumerated among Jehiel's sons, though really his grandson, because he was head of a house of fathers.
