Tanner

/TAN-er/

Summary

A tanner was one who prepared animal hides into leather, an occupation considered unclean by Jews but mentioned significantly in Acts when Peter lodged with Simon the tanner.

Biblical Reference

Simon the tanner of Joppa hosted Peter for 'many days,' and it was at his house that Peter received the vision of the sheet with unclean animals. The fact that Peter stayed with a tanner, whose occupation involved handling dead animals and was thus ritually defiling, may have been preparing Peter for the message that God was declaring all things clean and welcoming Gentiles into the church.
