Plumb-Line

/PLUM LINE/

Summary

A plumb line was a cord with a weight used to test vertical alignment, employed by God as a symbol of His standard of judgment.

Prophetic Symbol

Amos saw the Lord standing beside a wall with a plumb line, declaring 'I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel.' As a plumb line tests whether a wall is true, God was testing Israel against His standard. The result showed they were out of line—judgment would fall. Isaiah similarly speaks of righteousness as the measuring line and justice as the plumb line.
