Summary

Plaster was used in ancient construction for coating walls and was involved in both architectural and medical contexts in Scripture.

Architectural Use

Walls were plastered with lime morite or clay. Belshazzar saw the fingers of a hand writing on the plaster of his palace wall. Moses commanded Israel to set up plastered stones with the law written on them. Egyptian buildings were similarly plastered before painting.

Medical Use

Isaiah prescribed a 'plaster of figs' to be applied to Hezekiah's boil. This poultice was a common ancient remedy. The Hebrew term for such applications relates to pressing or spreading a substance on the affected area.
