Summary

A storage container, most notably the money chest placed in the temple by Jehoiada the priest for collecting funds for repairs.

Jehoiada the priest had a chest made and set it beside the altar at the temple gate. He bored a hole in its lid so that priests could deposit the money brought to the house of the Lord. When full, the money was counted and used for temple repairs.

Other Uses

The Hebrew word 'aron' used for the temple chest is the same word used for the Ark of the Covenant and for Joseph's coffin in Egypt. A different Hebrew word 'genazim' refers to chests of rich apparel mentioned in Ezekiel's description of Tyre's trade.
