קַב/KAB/

A hollow vessel

Summary

A Hebrew unit of dry measure equal to about two quarts, mentioned only once in Scripture during the siege of Samaria.

Definition and Size

The cab was a Hebrew measure for dry goods, derived from a word meaning 'hollow vessel.' According to rabbinic tradition, it was the sixth part of a seah and the eighteenth part of an ephah, equivalent to nearly two quarts in English measure.

Key verses:2 Kings 6:25

Biblical Usage

The cab appears only once in Scripture, during the severe famine of the siege of Samaria, when desperate conditions drove prices to such extremes that a fourth part of a cab of dove's dung sold for five pieces of silver. This passage illustrates the dire circumstances of the besieged city under Ben-hadad's Syrian army.
