Summary

A large earthenware jar used for storing flour or carrying water, not a wooden barrel as the English word suggests.

The Widow's Barrel

During the famine in Elijah's time, the widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour in her 'barrel' (jar). God miraculously sustained her household so that the barrel of flour did not run empty throughout the drought.

Elijah's Contest

At Mount Carmel, Elijah commanded that four barrels (jars) of water be poured over the sacrifice and the altar three times. Despite being thoroughly soaked, fire from heaven consumed the sacrifice, demonstrating God's power over Baal.
