Hivites

Summary

A Canaanite tribe descended from Canaan, whose most notable members were the Shechemites (who wronged Dinah) and the Gibeonites (who deceived Joshua).

Identity and Territory

The Hivites descended from Canaan (Genesis 10:17; 1 Chronicles 1:15) and inhabited various parts of Canaan. Shechem was a Hivite city where Jacob's daughter Dinah was violated (Genesis 34:2). The Gibeonites who deceived Joshua were Hivites (Joshua 9:7; 11:19). They also dwelt in the Lebanon region near Mount Hermon (Joshua 11:3; Judges 3:3).

Interactions with Israel

Esau married a Hivite woman (Genesis 36:2). The Gibeonite deception led to their servitude as woodcutters and water-carriers for Israel (Joshua 9), a covenant Israel honored even centuries later when Saul violated it (2 Samuel 21). King Solomon conscripted remaining Hivites for forced labor (1 Kings 9:20-21).
