Melon

Summary

A fruit the Israelites remembered from Egypt, which they craved during the wilderness wanderings.

Israel's Complaint

During the wilderness wandering, the people complained: 'We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: but now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes' (Numbers 11:5-6). They despised God's miraculous provision while craving Egypt's produce.

Egyptian Agriculture

Egypt was famous for its melons, cultivated in the fertile Nile valley. Both watermelons and muskmelons grew abundantly there. The Hebrew word avattichim refers to watermelons specifically. Egyptian paintings depict melons among the produce of the land. These refreshing fruits would be particularly missed in the arid wilderness.

Spiritual Lesson

The Israelites' complaint reveals a dangerous spiritual condition—valuing what they had in bondage over freedom with God's provision. They had manna from heaven yet longed for Egyptian vegetables. Their dissatisfaction with divine provision brought divine judgment (Numbers 11:33). The passage warns against romanticizing the past and despising present blessings.
