Unfaithfulness

Summary

The failure to be faithful or trustworthy, whether toward God in keeping covenant obligations or toward others in maintaining commitments.

Biblical Concept

The Greek term apistos can mean either 'unbelieving' or 'unfaithful.' Jesus upbraided the people as a 'faithless and perverse generation,' expressing disappointment at both their lack of faith and their unreliability. The term captures the moral failure of those who do not maintain their obligations and commitments, particularly in covenant relationship with God.

Key verses:Matthew 17:17Luke 12:462 Timothy 2:13

Consequences

Scripture presents unfaithfulness through various images: the barren fig tree that bears no fruit, the unproductive vineyard that yields wild grapes, the faithless servant who mistreats his fellow servants. Israel's unfaithfulness to God was depicted as spiritual adultery by the prophets. Yet even human unfaithfulness cannot nullify God's faithfulness to His promises.
