The rich man in Jesus's parable was 'tormented' in the flame of Hades. The demons questioned Jesus, 'Have you come to torment us before the time?' The smoke of the torment of those who worship the beast ascends forever. On earth, torment described severe illness or demonic affliction. The wicked are warned of eternal torment in the lake of fire.
