Pattern

/PAT-ern/

Summary

A pattern in Scripture refers to a divine model or type shown to guide construction of sacred objects or to exemplify godly living.

Divine Patterns

Moses was shown a 'pattern' of the tabernacle on Mount Sinai—not necessarily an architect's drawing but a divine conception to guide construction. David similarly gave Solomon the pattern for the temple. The Greek word tupos ('type') and related terms describe both the heavenly original and the earthly copy made according to it.

Patterns for Living

Paul presents himself as a pattern of God's patience toward sinners and urges Timothy to hold fast the pattern of sound words. Titus is exhorted to show himself a pattern of good works. Christ Himself is the ultimate pattern for believers to follow.
