Parricide

/PAIR-ih-syde/

Summary

Parricide, the murder of one's own parents, is recorded in Scripture with horror as an extreme violation of the fifth commandment.

Biblical Instances

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, was killed by two of his sons as he worshipped in the house of his god Nisroch. This judgment came after his blasphemous defiance of the God of Israel. The sons escaped to Armenia while another son, Esarhaddon, took the throne. Such acts of parricide were viewed as monstrous violations of natural affection and divine order.
