Millennium
Summary
The thousand-year period mentioned in Revelation during which Christ reigns and Satan is bound.
☩Biblical Basis
Revelation 20 describes Satan being bound for 'a thousand years' (Revelation 20:2), during which martyrs 'lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years' (Revelation 20:4). 'The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection' (Revelation 20:5). The term 'millennium' (Latin for 'thousand years') derives from this passage.
☩Major Interpretations
Christians hold three major views: Premillennialism teaches Christ returns before the millennium to establish His earthly kingdom. Postmillennialism holds the Gospel will progressively Christianize the world, after which Christ returns. Amillennialism interprets the thousand years symbolically as the present church age, with Christ reigning spiritually through His Church.
☩Satan's Binding
During the millennium, Satan is 'cast into the bottomless pit, and shut up, and a seal set upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled' (Revelation 20:3). At the millennium's end, Satan is briefly released, leads a final rebellion (Gog and Magog), and is cast into the lake of fire forever (Revelation 20:7-10).
☩Prophetic Hope
Old Testament prophets anticipated an era of righteousness, peace, and blessing. Isaiah described wolves dwelling with lambs (Isaiah 11:6-9), swords beaten into plowshares (Isaiah 2:4), and the earth full of the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:9). Whether these find literal or spiritual fulfillment remains debated, but all Christians anticipate Christ's complete triumph.
