“God with us”
Summary
Emmanuel (also spelled Immanuel) is the prophetic name meaning 'God with us,' given in Isaiah's prophecy and applied by Matthew to Jesus Christ. The name encapsulates the incarnation—God dwelling among humanity in the person of Christ.
☩Prophetic Origin and Fulfillment
The name Emmanuel appears in Isaiah's prophecy to King Ahaz: 'Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel' (Isa 7:14). Matthew applies this prophecy to Christ's birth: 'Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us' (Matt 1:23). The spelling 'Emmanuel' in Matthew follows the Greek transliteration (Ἐμμανουήλ), while 'Immanuel' reflects the Hebrew more directly.
