Benedictions
Summary
Formal blessings pronounced by authorized persons, especially the Aaronic blessing prescribed by God for the priests to speak over Israel.
☩The Aaronic Blessing
God commanded Aaron and his sons to bless Israel with the threefold benediction: 'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.'
☩Patriarchal Blessings
Throughout Scripture, blessings were pronounced by those in authority. Melchizedek blessed Abraham. Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau. Jacob blessed his twelve sons. Moses blessed the tribes of Israel before his death.
☩Apostolic Benedictions
The New Testament epistles frequently close with benedictions, particularly Paul's characteristic blessing: 'The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.'
