Socoh(shocho, shochoh, shoco, sochoh)

שׂוֹכֹה/SOH-koh/

Branches

Summary

Two towns in Judah bearing this name: one in the Shephelah near the Valley of Elah where David fought Goliath, and another in the hill country near Hebron.

Socoh of the Shephelah

This Socoh lay in the lowland district of Judah in the same group as Jarmuth, Azekah, and Shaaraim. Near here, at Ephes-dammim between Socoh and Azekah, the Philistines encamped for the memorable engagement in which Goliath was slain. Rehoboam fortified it after the northern tribes' revolt, and the Philistines later captured it during Ahaz's reign. The site is identified with esh-Shuweikeh, about eight miles from Beth-guvrin, with extensive ruins and many caverns.

Socoh in the Hill Country

A separate town of Judah lay in the mountain district, listed with Anab, Jattir, and Eshtemoh. Robinson discovered it in the Wady el-Khalil about ten miles southwest of Hebron, also bearing the name esh-Shuweikeh.

Key verses:Joshua 15:48

Notable Resident

From the lowland Socoh probably came Antigonus of Soco, who lived about the 3rd century BC. He was the disciple of Simon 'the Just' and teacher of Sadok. His teaching in the Mishna was memorable: 'Be not ye like servants who serve their lord that they may receive a reward. But be ye like servants who serve their lord without hope of receiving a reward, but in the fear of heaven.'
