Pretorium(judgment hall)

/preh-TOR-ee-um/

Summary

The praetorium was the official residence of a Roman governor, where Jesus was tried before Pilate and mocked by the soldiers.

Location and Use

In Jerusalem, the praetorium was likely either the Antonia Fortress adjacent to the temple or Herod's palace on the western hill. It served as Pilate's headquarters during festivals when he came to Jerusalem from Caesarea. The term could designate the governor's residence, the headquarters building, or the guard attached to it. Jesus was brought here for trial, and the soldiers gathered there to mock Him.

Paul's Imprisonment

Paul was imprisoned in the praetorium at Caesarea during his two-year confinement under Felix and Festus. He wrote to the Philippians that his imprisonment had become known throughout the whole praetorium guard, advancing the gospel's spread even among Roman soldiers.
