Summary

Pethor was the city in Mesopotamia on the Euphrates River where the prophet Balaam lived.

Location

Pethor was situated on the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia (Aram-naharaim), far to the north of Moab. Balak sent messengers to this distant place to summon Balaam to curse Israel. The exact location has been identified with Pitru, a city mentioned in Assyrian inscriptions of Shalmaneser II, near the confluence of the Euphrates and Sajur rivers.
