Merathaim

מְרָתַיִם

Double Rebellion

Summary

A symbolic name for Babylon meaning 'double rebellion' or 'double bitterness.'

Prophetic Use

'Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD' (Jeremiah 50:21). The name is a wordplay: southern Babylon was called 'land of the bitter river,' but Jeremiah doubles it to emphasize Babylon's deserved judgment.
