Maroth

מָרוֹת/MAY-roth/

Bitternesses or bitter fountains

Summary

Maroth was a town in the lowlands of Judah mentioned only in Micah's prophecy, whose name ('bitternesses') the prophet used to describe the grief that would come upon its inhabitants.

Prophetic Reference

Maroth appears only in Micah's prophecy concerning the judgment coming upon the towns of Judah. The prophet employs a wordplay on the town's name, which means 'bitternesses': 'For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the Lord unto the gate of Jerusalem.' The inhabitants hoped for good but received bitterness—the very meaning of their town's name.
