Grief

/GREEF/

Summary

Sorrow and mental distress arising from misfortune, loss, or transgression.

Expression of Grief

Oriental peoples exhibited affliction through demonstrative signs such as wringing hands above the head, beating the breast, tearing garments, and sitting in ashes. The degree of connection between the deceased and mourner naturally modified these expressions. Hebrew customs in mourning were similar to those of modern Orientals.

Key verses:2 Samuel 13:19Nahum 2:8Luke 18:13

Causes of Grief

Scripture recognizes grief arising from common vexations, misfortunes, deaths and partings, and especially from the sorrows of transgression. Sin produces grief among its sad harvest, as when Esau's carelessness was followed by unavailing tears. Those who lust after riches pierce themselves with many sorrows.
