Jehovah Jireh

יְהוָה יִרְאֶה/jeh-HOH-vuh JY-reh/

The LORD will see, or The LORD will provide

Summary

The name Abraham gave to the place where God provided a ram as a substitute sacrifice for Isaac, meaning 'The LORD Will Provide.'

Abraham's Memorial

Jehovah-Jireh ('The LORD will see' or 'provide') was the name given by Abraham to the place where he offered the ram providentially supplied in place of his son Isaac (Genesis 22:14). The name alludes to Abraham's response to Isaac's question about the lamb for the offering: 'God will provide himself a lamb' (Genesis 22:8). Abraham perceived that his words had become an unconscious prophecy, and the phrase became a Hebrew proverb: 'In the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.' This has led many to connect the site with Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, where Solomon later built the Temple (2 Chronicles 3:1).
