Haphraim

חֲפָרַיִם/haf-RAY-im/

Two pits or double pit

Summary

Haphraim, meaning "two pits," was a city in the territory of Issachar mentioned near Shunem, possibly identified with modern el-Afuleh or ruins at el-Farriyeh.

Location

Haphraim was allotted to the tribe of Issachar, mentioned in the boundary description between Shunem and Shihon. Eusebius placed it about six Roman miles north of Leggio. Some scholars identify it with el-Afuleh, about six miles northeast of Lejjun (Megiddo) and two miles west of Solam (ancient Shunem). Others suggest ruins at el-Farriyeh at coordinates 32°38'N, 35°6'E. The Apocrypha may mention this place as Aphaerema.
