Hai

/HAY-eye/

Summary

Hai is an alternate form of the place name Ai, appearing in Genesis where the Hebrew article 'ha' (the) is included as part of the name.

Identification

Hai is the same as Ai, with the translators having apparently included the Hebrew definite article (ha) as part of the name in Genesis 12:8 and 13:3, but in these passages only. The name with the article means "the heap" or "the ruin." Abraham pitched his tent between Bethel and Hai (Ai) when he first entered Canaan and again when he returned from Egypt.
