Gimzo

גִּמְזוֹ/GIM-zoh/

Fertile in sycamores

Summary

A town in the lowland of Judah captured by the Philistines during the reign of King Ahaz.

Location and Conquest

Gimzo lay in the plain of Judah near the border of Philistine territory, mentioned in connection with Timnah. The name means 'a place fertile in sycamores.' During the troubled reign of Ahaz, when Judah was beset by enemies on every side, the Philistines invaded the lowland cities and seized Gimzo with its dependent villages. The site is identified with modern Jimzu, a village on an eminence about three and a half miles southeast of Lydda on the old road from Jerusalem to Jaffa.
