Gederah
“The sheepfold or fortress”
☩Location
Gederah was situated in the Shephelah, the low hill country of Judah, and is mentioned in the territorial allotment to that tribe. According to Eusebius and Jerome, it was still known as a village near the valley of Elah, the famous site of David's victory over Goliath. Modern scholars have identified it with Khirbet Jadireh, approximately three miles southwest of Gezer.
☩Inhabitants
The inhabitants of Gederah appear to be referenced in Chronicles, where the Hebrew term translated 'hedges' in older versions is now understood to refer to this town. The designation 'Gederathite' applied to Jozabad, one of David's warriors, likely indicates he was from this place. The town was located in a region suited for sheep-raising, as its name suggests, near Azekah and Socoh.
