Elparan

אֵיל פָּארָן (El Paran)/el-PAY-ran/

Terebinth of Paran, or God his deliverance

Summary

El-paran (meaning 'terebinth of Paran' or 'God his deliverance') was a location in the wilderness of Paran in the southern region of Canaan, mentioned as the southernmost point reached by Chedorlaomer's coalition during their military campaign.

Military Campaign Context

El-paran appears in Genesis 14:6 as the southernmost point of Chedorlaomer's coalition's conquests: 'And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto El-paran, which is by the wilderness.' The kings had swept through Transjordan, defeating the Rephaim, Zuzim, Emim, and Horites before reaching this boundary. The marginal reading 'the plain of Paran' suggests it may have been a notable landmark—possibly a sacred terebinth tree—marking a boundary in the wilderness of Paran in southern Palestine.
