Chilmad

/KIL-mad/

Summary

An Asiatic place mentioned alongside Sheba and Asshur as a trading partner with Tyre, though its exact location remains uncertain.

Trade with Tyre

Chilmad appears in Ezekiel's lament over Tyre as one of the regions whose merchants traded with that great commercial city. It is mentioned in conjunction with Sheba and Asshur, suggesting it was part of the extensive network of eastern trade routes. Some scholars have identified it with Charmande, a large and flourishing town near the Euphrates mentioned by Xenophon, while others propose textual emendations giving different meanings entirely. The Chaldee Targum translates it as Media.
