A son of Shem and ancestor of the Assyrian nation, from whom the ancient kingdom and its capital derived their name.

Asshur was one of the five sons of Shem listed in the Table of Nations. From him descended the Assyrian people, and his name became attached to their land and its principal city. Some interpret Genesis 10:11 as stating that Asshur went forth from Shinar and built Nineveh and other Assyrian cities, while others understand Nimrod as the builder.
