Bether

בֶּתֶר/BEE-ther/

Division, or cutting

Summary

Mountains mentioned in the Song of Solomon, the exact location of which is uncertain, possibly meaning 'mountains of division.'

Interpretation

The 'mountains of Bether' are mentioned once in Scripture. The word means 'dissection' or 'division,' so these may be mountains of separation, cut up by deep ravines. Some suggest they are the same as the 'mountains of spices' in Song of Solomon 8:14. A place called Bether (or Bethar) is known from later Jewish history as the fortress where Bar Kochba made his last stand against Hadrian in 135 AD, possibly identified with modern Bittir southwest of Jerusalem.
