The name of several cities in the Old Testament, most notably a fortified city on the northern edge of the Arnon gorge that marked the southern boundary of the Amorite kingdom.

Aroer of Reuben

The principal city named Aroer was situated on the northern rim of the Arnon gorge, marking the southern border of the territory Israel conquered from Sihon king of the Amorites. It was assigned to the tribe of Reuben and later rebuilt by the Gadites. This strategic location controlled the King's Highway and was mentioned in many territorial descriptions.

Other Cities Named Aroer

Another Aroer lay east of Rabbah in Gad's territory. A third Aroer existed in the Negeb of Judah, to which David sent spoil after defeating the Amalekites. The name suggests a place of ruins or a juniper-covered location.
